End of the term self - assesement

Writting summaries. Honestly, it was new for me to write a summary. From the start, it was a little bit hard, because I did not know what do the summary consists of. But it was a good practise, how to find the main points of the text, rewrite them shortly in your own words and make a good conclusion.
Online exercises. These exercises were being done during lectures after every module. If I had read the module carefully, it was easy to do exercise well, but otherwise, I had to read it once again during lecture or ask my friend for the correct answer :).

Moodle tests. These tests were quite similar to online exercise, because the tests involved all material that I had read in module. Doing such tests was really usefull for recalling information and helped to remember new definitions.

Online listening in class. I have always appreciate such exercise, because in my mind it is one of the best ways to improve your english, because we have the opportunity to hear really true english. Unfortunatelly, my skills were not so good to do exercise excellently, but anyway I believe that it was really useful. What is more, the topic of listening task was always apllied to a certain module and this also helped us to confirm material which had been read.

Traditional listening to cassettes. Well I did not see the main difference between online and traditional listening. To my mind, the point is the same unless different themes of listening.

Power point presentation. It was new for me to do PPP in english. Honestly, it was a challenge to speak in public english, I was really nervous and confused. Anyway, I hope that it was helpful, maybe next time I would be more brave and confident. It was a really good practise of public speaking, expressing your minds and representing a certain topic.

Speaking impromptu. Honestly, I was not very active speaker during lectures. I must confess, that I am lack in self - esteem. I do not think that I have enough abilities to do it well, so, I do not do this at all.

Short talks (ready - made speech). At this activity I was a little bit better than in speaking on the spot, I think. It was much more easier to speak when you are prepared, because you have some notes and know what to talk about. Maybe the more I had spoken ready made speeches, the more confidence I would have in speaking impromptu.

Time in a bottle. Summary

The majority of students can not imagine their weekends without parties and every party is unimaginable without alcohol. Drinking alcohol has become a part of college life. It is noticed that 40 per cent of American students are supossed to be heavy drinkers. Researches have decided to study this problem by investigating what encourages students to drink.

Researcher Clayton Neighbor and his collegues have found that social norms have influence on student's choice. Students wish to be members or fraternity or sorority and it stimulates them to be "cool" and drink alcohol. So, one of the factors, which encourages students to drink is pressure of others.

Another factor is a belief that drinking alcohol helps to forget problems, reduces tiredness and helps to relax.

All things considered, there is one way how to reduce the level of student's drinking - to change their attitude towards alcohol.

Professor Richard Wiseman

Richard Wiseman is based at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK, and has gained an international reputation for research into quirky areas of psychology, including deception, humour, luck and the paranormal. Wiseman started his professional life as a magician, before graduating in Psychology from University College London and obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh.
I have read more about his researches in Psychology of luck. This aspect of Wiseman's research explores why some people live charmed lives and develops techniques that enable others to enhance their good fortune. The project began in 1994 and has involved hundreds of exceptionally lucky and unlucky people.
Professor decided to search for the elusive luck factor by investigating the actual beliefs and experiences of lucky and unlucky people. From the result, Wiseman was able to identify four main factors which explained living lucky life. Here they are:
1. Maximise chance opportunities
2. Listen to intuition
3. Expect good fortune
4. Turn bad luck to good
Then he was able to show a group of people that considered themselves unlucky, how to think and behave like lucky people.
The results were astounding with almost all participants reporting significant life changes: including increased levels of luck, self-esteem, physical well-being, confidence and success.
The results of this research were published in the self-help book "The Luck Factor", that became a best-seller in the United Kingdom.

Psychology of the Internet

From almost total obscurity the Internet swiftly leapt into our lives. Nowadays it sustains almost any human activity we can imagine.
As a new environment, the Internet can have potent effects on our behavior. It is a place where we are acting and interacting rather strangely at times. Sometimes it effects seem to be quite positive, but sometimes we do things online that we might never do in any other environment and that we regret later.
Speaking about youth, they usually use the Internet for communication with others in chat rooms or social webs. When people are online at the same time, they can enter chat rooms to engage in a kind of real time conversation with others. It looks really atractive, because people can create their new personality, because nobody knows who they really are. But the real problem is that sometimes it became like an obssesion and people spend all their free time by chating with others. And it is quite possible that in a course of time, those people will lose ability to communicate with others "face to face".
On the other hand, the Internet could be very helpful and necessary. For example, for our studies ( to find information, use electronical dictionaries or electronical books ), daily life ( to read news, pay bills, do shopping ), job ( to fill and send documents ).
In conclusion, the Internet has it's advantages and disadvantages and it depends on a person on which purpose he will use the Internet.

Summary

With the development of civilization, waiting in lines became a normal thing and now the main problem for businesses is how to cope with customer's dissatisfaction or how to reduce their time, spent in a queue as much as possible. These points are described in the article ''You are how you wait: queue psychology'', written by Malcom Gladwell.
First of all, a lot of researches have been studying it and they found some ways how to solve this problem. It is worth to mention, that time, spend in a queue, seems to be about 30 percent longer than the real waiting time. Anyway, some businesses have discovered that they can improve customer's satisfaction by concentrating as much on reducing perceived waiting time. For example, by putting large mirrors next to elevator doors, then person is too busy smartening up his appearance to notice, how long he is waiting. Another way, how to reduce waiting time in bags checking lines at airports, is parking airplanes further than usually, because then people have to walk and those, who checked bags, only have to wait an additional minute.
Finally, researches have found, that people are often angry with intruders, but they rarely protest.
All things considered, waiting in queues is like daily routine in our lives and we can not avoid this. Only one we can do, is to accept it and try to find some advantages of it.

My future profession

There is a great variety of jobs nowadays. Some jobs are considered to be prestigious, while others are not so popular among young people.
Finishing school is the beginning of the independent life for millions of school leavers. Many roads are open before them, but it is not an easy thing to make up your mind and choose a profession. As for me, I have always dreamt about studying journalism. Unfortunately, I had bad luck at the entrance examination. Despite this, I had had the opportunity to study it, but I would have to pay for my studies. That is why I have chosen to study psychology. Honestly, studying psychology was not exactly I dreamt about, but now I am glad about my choice and studies. What is more, the profession of psychologist looks very perspective, especialy in this ''fast moving'' world, when people are so busy, unhappy and depressive. There are also many other problems, for example, discrimination, violence, dependency and so on. I think that the only one, who can take the major part in solving them, is psychologist.
It is also worth to mention, that there are a lot of subfields of psychology and everyone can choose one suitable for him. Speaking about me, I would like to work at sport psychology, because I was a swimmer for a long time and I have been closely connected with sport till now, so, in my mind, I would have enough abilities and pleasure to work as a sport psychologist. Of course it is quite possible that my minds and wishes will change in a near future.
